Self-drive buggy rental or a guided tour: which to choose in Tenerife?
These are the two main ways to do a buggy tour in Tenerife, and they're not interchangeable: independence, pace, and who each one suits all differ. We help you decide before booking.
Format 1
How self-drive rental works
You drive on your own, following a map or route directions the operator gives you at the start. There's no guide physically in the convoy setting the pace: you decide when to stop, how fast to go, and — within the marked route — how to get there. In exchange, navigation and on-the-ground decisions are your responsibility.
Format 2
How a guided tour (safari) works
You drive in convoy behind a guide, along a set route, with marked stops along the way. You don't have to worry about navigation or losing the group: the guide sets the pace. This is the format usually advertised in Tenerife as a "buggy safari" — we cover it in more detail on Buggy Safari Tenerife.

Requirements by format
Both formats usually require the same base licence, since in both you're the one driving a road-legal vehicle. The real difference isn't in the paperwork — it's in the independence expected of you: with self-drive you're responsible for navigation; with a guided tour, the guide handles it for you.
